Why Florida wells smell like sulfur

Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is naturally produced by sulfate-reducing bacteria in the Floridan aquifer. Even tiny amounts — below 1 part per million — produce that unmistakable rotten-egg odor. Unchecked, H₂S also corrodes plumbing, blackens silverware, and damages water heater anode rods.

How we eliminate it

There are two methods we use, chosen based on your test results: • Chlorination + retention + catalytic carbon — best for high sulfide, iron-bacteria, or bacteria contamination. Most reliable long-term. • Air-injection oxidizing filter (AIO) — best for low-to-moderate sulfide without bacteria. No chemicals required. We never recommend a system without testing first.

What to expect after install

The smell is gone the same day. We commission the system, walk you through the controls, and schedule your first service visit. Most homeowners notice cleaner laundry, better-tasting coffee, and longer-lasting water heaters within weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Will a softener remove the sulfur smell?+

No. Softeners exchange hardness minerals — they do not oxidize hydrogen sulfide. You need either chlorination or an air-injection oxidizing filter.

How much does sulfur removal cost?+

Most Florida sulfur systems run $2,400–$4,800 installed. We provide a written quote based on your actual water test.

Will it come back?+

Not if the system is properly sized and maintained. Annual media checks and chlorine refills (where applicable) keep performance steady for 8–10+ years.
